Composer and tenor saxophonist Yannick Rieu is one of the finest musicians - in any genre of music - to have emerged from Québec, and one who’s also enjoyed an international career for many years, particularly in France. As early as 1988, Down Beat, the American bible of jazz, ranked him amongst the 20 most promising sax players in the world along side Branford Marsalis, Joe Lovano and Courtney Pine. The three musicians bring their various influences to gipsy jazz they practise since a couple of years : bossa nova, french songs, latin music, swing...Mire Pral offers you to cross these landscapes, from Europe and somewhere else, on board of their caravan.

The Kalmunity Vibe Collective has put together a special jazz project. Original compositions and collective "live organic improv" are the points of departure. Elements of dub /reggae, funk, hip-hop, afro-beat and r'n'b are integrated into a jazz conception, allowing the musicians to reflect their experiences (musical and otherwise) in the moment. Their performances blur the line between improvisation and real-time composition, making each set a unique experience.

Cuban son, rumba, timba and salsa rhythms drive and an exciting repertoire of original compositions as well as some innovative arrangements of traditional themes drawn from the very heart of Cuba.

Originally from Vancouver James Newhouse began to perform in Montreal five years ago as a solo piano player at Cellinis Restaurant and La Kemia with a quartet, private venues and special events. Worked in the Plateau extensively as a jazz piano accompanist and session musician. Influences include Jarret, Chopin and Petersen. From the age of four he began with classical piano then played the drums at 10. Educated at Handsworth in percussion and jazz piano and Capilano college Jazz program. Enjoying a taste for the eclectic, playing towards the edge of what is possible.

The first set fires up with Bellegarde and his trio, playing host to a range of well known talents from the Montreal scene as well as musicians from out of town. The jam opens in the second set, to any jazz musician with the confidence to step up and play…there’s an unspoken rule though: “If you can’t keep up, you shouldn’t be on stage”. A great place to play and chill…. the jam continues on into the early hours!

Soul and jazz vocalist Emma Frank first moved to Montreal as a literature student at McGill University. Since, she has been active in the Montreal music scene, performing regularly with Kalmunity Vibe Collective, pursuing her own project, Emma & the Noise, and singing and MCing in Vermont-based hip-hop group Strength in Numbers. With her quintet she will be performing a collection of jazz standards and original compositions.

Simon Delage is an active drummer in the Montreal scene. In 2007 he completed a bachelor’s degree in jazz performance at McGill University where he studied with Chris McCann. He also continued his development studying with, among others, Jim Black, Greg Hutchinson, Nate Smith, Rémi Bolduc and George Mitchell. He has been sharing the stage lately with renowned musicians like Greg Amirault, Sage Reynolds, Adrian Vedady, André White, Jean Beaudet and François Bourrassa.

Friday 19 08:30 PM | JAZZ EN RAFALE - LES BOPPERS Pour composer son premier album de Jazz, le tromboniste Benoit Gagné a obtenu la bourse du Conseil des Arts et des lettres du Québec. Grâce à l’aide financière de Musicaction, il a enregistré l’Album Les Boppers avec le trompettiste Benoit Piché, André Leroux au saxophone, Jean Cyr à la contrebasse, Guy Dubuc au piano et Christian Lajoie à la batterie. En 2008-2009, Benoit compose sept nouveaux titres et réunit ses collègues des Boppers. Ils sont maintenant de retour sur la scène québécoise, prêts à vous présenter un spectacle aux influences Be-Bop écrit et destiné pour un grand publique.

Born in Ottawa, Frank Lozano studied at Humber College in Toronto with Pat LaBarbera and in Boston with Jerry Bergonzi. He has participated in the Montreal and Toronto Jazz festivals with, among others, Tito Puente and Oliver Jones. After a tour of Czechoslovakia in 1990, Lozano moved to Montreal where he joined the Bernard Primeau Jazz Ensemble. With Primeau and special guest trombonist Slide Hampton, Lozano recorded a CD and toured France. Heplays with FACT, the Montreal Jazz Big Band, Avalon, guitarist Rainer Wiens in the group Zoom Horizon, bassist Ron Séguin, René Lussier’s group Boudine and Alain Bédard’s quartet.

Saxophonist and composer Jean-Christophe Béney studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris. Since his debut as a professional musician, his career has been divided between experience as a sideman, and experience as composer and band leader. As a sideman he has played in the bands of Laurent Coq, François Théberge, Stéphane et Lionel Belmondo, the big band of Antoine Hervé, and more recently in the sextet of Yves Léveillé, Effendi Jazzzlab, Auguste quintet, TRONIX, etc. Sharing his time between Paris and Montreal for a few years, he has released his three most recent albums on the Canadian jazz label Effendi Records, in 2002, 2004 and in October 2007, featuring his most recent disc, Pop Up.
