Originally from Vancouver James Newhouse began to perform in Montreal five years ago as a solo piano player at Cellinis Restaurant and La Kemia with a quartet, private venues and special events. Worked in the Plateau extensively as a jazz piano accompanist and session musician. Influences include Jarret, Chopin and Petersen. From the age of four he began with classical piano then played the drums at 10. Educated at Handsworth in percussion and jazz piano and Capilano college Jazz program. Enjoying a taste for the eclectic, playing towards the edge of what is possible.

Alex Bellegarde’s dynamic Tuesday jam session has become one of Montreal’s hippest weekly jazz events. The first set fires up with Bellegarde and his trio, playing host to a range of well known talents from the Montreal scene as well as musicians from out of town. The jam opens in the second set, to any jazz musician with the confidence to step up and play…there’s an unspoken rule though: “If you can’t keep up, you shouldn’t be on stage”. Après avoir étudié la musique classique durant 13 ans, Mireille Boily chante maintenant le jazz. Elle affectionne cette musique depuis ses études universitaires avec Mme Ranee Lee, à l’Université Laval où elle est bachelière. Mireille continue présentement son cheminement en performance jazz dans le programme de Maîtrise de l’Université McGill. Elle a antérieurement enseigné le chant jazz au Collège d’Alma et fait parti de productions telles que Ecce Mundo, au Saguenay, et les Folie’s de Paris, à Québec. Aujourd'hui, elle chante et compose pour son projet personnel: le Mireille Boily Jazz Ensemble qui en est à son deuxième album, le Mireille Boily Vocal Project Ensemble et le collectif de compositeurs-arrangeurs: le M-Theory Collective. On peut entendre sa voix dans ces formations et plusieurs autres dans différents clubs et festivals au Québec.

Née à Gaspé, Aurélia O’Leary grandit dans le sud de la France. Elle fera alors partie de plusieurs formations musicales, rock, chansons françaises et puis jazz. Elle gagne le concours de Jazz Vocal de Crest, fait la première partie d’Henri Salvador et décide de poursuivre ses expériences à Paris. Après plusieurs aventures riches et intenses autour du jazz, elle enregistre un album électro-jazz avec le magique Pierre-Alain Goualch. C’est en 2003 qu’elle choisit de revenir au Québec. Sur scène Aurélia a un charisme qui ne peut laisser indifférent ainsi qu'une voix chaude de contralto qui s'aventure dans des couleurs variées et parfois osées. Elle interprète les standards de jazz avec une grande liberté en laissant place à la créativité de chacun sur scène.

Prolific musician and always looping for new sounds, Thomas Carbou experiments every kind of music : jazz, traditionnel music, fusion, gospel, funk…He recorded seven CDs as a leader, one with his band Elec'Trio and two as a co-leader with the saxophone player Pierre Diaz. Very active on the French musical scene, he's beginning to become known on the international level, he has already performed overseas ; Germany, Vietnam, New York USA and Canada (Montréal) where he permanently established his resident since September 2003. Multiplying projects and musical encounters, he has performed on stage or studio with Dave Liebman, David Binney, Ralph Alessi, Lonnie Plaxico, Lionel Cordew, Gilad, Elisabeth Kontomanou, François D'Amours, Carlo Rizzo, Rémi Bolduc, Sylvain Luc, Pierre Diaz, Ngoc Daï, Cao Ho Nga, Nguyen Anh Tan and many more!

The Kalmunity Vibe Collective has put together a special jazz project. Original compositions and collective "live organic improv" are the points of departure. Elements of dub /reggae, funk, hip-hop, afro-beat and r'n'b are integrated into a jazz conception, allowing the musicians to reflect their experiences (musical and otherwise) in the moment. Their performances blur the line between improvisation and real-time composition, making each set a unique experience.

Born into a family well known for songwriting and poetry, Jessica Vigneault completed studies in classical and jazz piano at St-Laurent CEGEP and University of Montreal. Her development as multifaceted artist has led to over a decade of performance and creation, taking her to France and Austria, and on the Quebec chanson and jazz scenes as well, notably by appearances in the MIJF and the Montreal Off Jazz Festival. A voice as warm as it is ethereal, she performs a selection of some of her favorite jazz, chanson and Brazilian standards, as well as some of her own creations, fusing her poetry and numerous musical influences in a surprising and harmonious blend.

Saxophonist, composer and arranger, Jean-Pierre Zanella is very much in demand on Quebec’s music scene. After finishing his Master degree in Jazz at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester N.Y., Zanella has played the Montreux Jazz Festival and the Saxophone International Congress in Nuremberg in 1982. That same year he recorded with the Eastman Jazz Ensemble and Saxology which won the «Downbeat Recording Award» for the best jazz group of the year.

Her songs and arrangements are richly informed by French chanson, world music, jazz or retro, but also theatre and poetry. A natural-born storyteller, she is inspired by the master poets of the genre, but also explores new sounds with curiosity and talent. This fall she won the 2008 Jury Prize at the Découvertes de la chanson de Magog.

Founding members, Alex Lefaivre and Gabriel Vinuela-Pelletier met at University of Montreal during the course of their studies. The pair recruited drummer Mark Nelson in 2008, with whom they recorded their first album. Alex and Gabriel both live in Parc-Extension, a mostly immigrant neighborhood in Montreal that is defined by the fusion of a wide variety cultures. This truly vibrant community has not only inspired the name of the band, but it’s whole musical direction as well. Parc-X Trio’s main goal is to create an original soundtrack that reflects their love of this unique Montreal borough. The trio has a wide range of influences such as the contemporary jazz sounds coming from New York and Europe as well as Classical, Pop and World music.

Friday 26 08:30 PM | MIKE RUD QUARTET Jazz guitarist Mike Rud completed a performance diploma at Edmonton's Grant MacEwan College, and proceeded on to a Bachelor of Music degree at Montreal's McGill University, graduating in 1992. In 1994, Mike attended the Banff International Jazz Workshop at the Banff Centre for the Arts, studying with greats of modern jazz such as Don Thompson and Norma Winstone. This led to an opportunity to study in New York with the jazz guitar master Jim Hall in 1995. In 1996, he returned to Montreal for his Masters' degree at McGill. Mike has performed with Herb Ellis, Kenny Wheeler, Chuck Israels, Ralph Bowen, Joe La Barbera, Guido Basso, Ian MacDougal, P.J. Perry, Tommy Banks, Denzal Sinclaire, John Stetch and many others. He has three CDs of his own out, Whyte Avenue, Chimbe, and Live from Lotusland, and is a guest on several other CDs. Mike has taught and/or spoken at a number of music schools. He has performed all over Canada, including appearances at the Vancouver Jazz Festival, and the Festival de Jazz de Montréal.

Composer and tenor saxophonist Yannick Rieu is one of the finest musicians - in any genre of music - to have emerged from Québec, and one who’s also enjoyed an international career for many years, particularly in France. As early as 1988, Down Beat, the American bible of jazz, ranked him amongst the 20 most promising sax players in the world along side Branford Marsalis, Joe Lovano and Courtney Pine. Since then, he’s been collecting rave reviews in jazz publications in the U.S., France and Canada for his recordings and his live performances.
