Alex Bellegarde’s dynamic Tuesday jam session has become one of Montreal’s hippest weekly jazz events. The first set fires up with Bellegarde and his trio, playing host to a range of well known talents from the Montreal scene as well as musicians from out of town. The jam opens in the second set, to any jazz musician with the confidence to step up and play…there’s an unspoken rule though: “If you can’t keep up, you shouldn’t be on stage”. Born in France, classically trained guitarist Christine Tassan moved to Québec in 1994 and has since played with a variety of musicians, namely Charles Papasoff, Jean Viau and Pierrot Fournier. In 1997 she was awarded the FrancoFolies de Montréal's Coup de Coeur prize. Inspired by the music of guitarist Django Reinhardt and European Gypsy jazz, she turned to jazz music, starting with a duo in 2000, followed by a quintet playing acoustic swing in the vein of Reinhardt's Hot Club de France. With her bands Gadjo Swing and les Imposteures, Christine Tassan created a unique repertoire that offers a mix of original Reinhardt compositions, traditional gypsy pieces, swing waltzes and French chansons with a Gypsy jazz touch.

Saxophonist, composer and arranger, Jean-Pierre Zanella is very much in demand on Québec’s music scene. After finishing his Master degree in Jazz at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester N.Y., Zanella has played the Montreux Jazz Festival and the Saxophone International Congress in Nuremberg in 1982. That same year he recorded with the Eastman Jazz Ensemble and Saxology which won the «Downbeat Recording Award» for the best jazz group of the year. Zanella has also participated in many jazz events. In France he played at the Europa Festival du Mans, Mulhouse Jazz Festival and in St-Malo. In Canada he played arround the country and he performed in many cities in Brazil. Passionnés de Django Reinhardt et de ses contemporains, Michel St-Pierre et Jonathan Charbonneau forment un duo explosif. En compagnie de Claude Kaufman au saxophone et de Daniel Labrosse à la contrebasse, l'énergie qu'ils déploient ainsi que leur symbiose sur scène ne laisse personne indifférent. Leur répertoire touche le jazz swing des années 30-40, des bossa novas, des ballades et même des valses de Piaf reprises à la manouche.

Maânouche Swing Trio est formé de Lou Boustani à la guitare, Damien Levasseur à la guitare et Simon Pagé à la basse. Ce trio a fait des apparitions sur les plus grandes scènes du jazz au Québec : Plusieurs spectacles au Festival de Jazz de Montréal, l'Off Festival de Jazz, FestiJazz de Rimouski, Festival de Jazz de Québec, Bar Upstairs, le Dièse-Onze (hebdomadairement depuis plus de 5 ans), quelques Maisons de la Culture. En nomination pour l'Album Jazz Interprétation 2011 à l'ADISQ, le trio évolue en parallèle avec un quintette à saveurs plus jazz, le Maânouche Swing Quintette (avec Ivanhoe Jolicoeur et Samuel Blais). Le trio offre un spectacle haut en couleurs où la haute performance musicale côtoie la musicalité des arrangements et une grande interaction entre les musiciens. À travers un répertoire traditionnel manouche, on visite une multitude de modernisations propres au trio ce qui procure à l'auditeur une expérience unique en jazz manouche et en musique en général. Composer and tenor saxophonist Yannick Rieu is one of the finest musicians - in any genre of music - to have emerged from Québec, and one who’s also enjoyed an international career for many years, particularly in France. As early as 1988, Down Beat, the American bible of jazz, ranked him amongst the 20 most promising sax players in the world along side Branford Marsalis, Joe Lovano and Courtney Pine. Since then, he’s been collecting rave reviews in jazz publications in the U.S., France and Canada for his recordings and his live performances. The Kalmunity Jazz Project has put together a special jazz project. Original compositions and collective "live organic improv" are the points of departure. Elements of dub /reggae, funk, hip-hop, afro-beat and r'n'b are integrated into a jazz conception, allowing the musicians to reflect their experiences (musical and otherwise) in the moment. Their performances blur the line between improvisation and real-time composition, making each set a unique experience.

Wednesday 30 09:00 PM | MAY CHEUNG QUARTET Over the past seven years, Vancouver-raised May Cheung has been establishing herself as a versatile jazz vocalist in the Montreal jazz scene. A graduate of McGill University in Jazz Voice (2007), May studied with Juno Award winner, Ranee Lee. While living in Montreal, May played and collaborated with Canadian high profile jazz artists such as Greg Ritchie, Dave Laing, Jeff Johnston and Fraser Hollins, just to name a few. Hailed as ‘The Next Ella Fitzgerald’ in the Vancouver Sun (2001), May’s sound is attributed through an array of jazz vocalists, from Carmen McRae to Kurt Elling, and draws her inspirations from a variety of music, including but not limited to soul, R&B, classical, folk and experimental music. May has sung in the Montreal Jazz Festival with the a cappella group, Effusion. In 2007, May shared the stage with guitarist, John Pizzarelli, and has sung extensively across Canada in cities including Vancouver, Victoria, Edmonton, Calgary, Montreal and Quebec with her own ensemble. That same year, May was featured in Sept Days newspaper for in recognition of her talent in the Chinese community in Montreal. In 2008, May was invited to participate in a workshop with Bobby McFerrin through the Kurt Weill Institute and in 2009, May was awarded a prestigious study grant from Canada Council for the Arts to live in New York City and study with New York Voices leader, Peter Eldridge. May Cheung is now based out of Brooklyn, New York where she has quickly become a vocalist/composer in high demand and a precocious talent to watch.
