Saturday 11 08:30 PM | RACHEL BONNEAU CHANTE ABBEY LINCOLN
In the world of vocal jazz, very few performers have composed as prolifically as the great jazz singer Abbey Lincoln (around 40 compositions). Although less known than Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan or Ella Fitzgerald, Abbey Lincoln, a tireless civil rights activist, wrote songs of extreme sensibility about human concerns: love, spirituality, sharing, and the environment are only a few of her favourite topics. Her powerful lyrics filled with rich and poignant poetry still move us and call us to action. Young Montréal jazz singer Rachel Bonneau culls twenty of Abbey Lincoln’s most beautiful songs – a first, and a real “tour de force.” Surrounded by an elite group, she will ravish you heart and soul. In this era of virtual pre-packaged divas manufactured for mass consumption, Rachel Bonneau is anything but yet another singer. Gifted with an exceptional musical personality, her suave and sensual voice, honed through time and multiple musical encounters, leaves a lasting mark on everyone who listens to it for the first time. An authentic woman, a sensitive, generous and open-minded soul, Rachel Bonneau will surely succeed in standing out among the great performers of contemporary vocal jazz, thanks to her maturity (despite her young age), elegance, and depth.
